Dance Film WOrkshop
DANCE FILM WORKSHOP is a 2 day workshop series that offers two entry points into dance filmmaking:
one for first time dance filmmakers
the second for those with experience

Both take place on back to back Saturdays the last 2 weekends in August, one day in Phoenix (Cahokia PHX) and the other day in Mesa (Cazo Dance Center).

Different topics are covered on each Saturday, so you can jump into different entry points that cover the basics of dance filmmaking.

If you aren’t sure what dance film is read this first! If you want some insight into the creative process, read this.

Location: Cahokia PHX
Workshop 1:
Dance Film Crash Course
10am-12pm
This all-experience-levels welcome workshop drops you into the world of dance filmmaking. You’ll dive into camera framing and angles, and then have the chance to explore the collaborative partnership between being both in front of and behind the camera. You will work in pairs to create a short 1 min no-edit dance film, guided by a storyboard, quick movement making decisions (choreography), and sequential filming to produce a silent or live sound dance film. It will end in a celebratory watch party and sharing circle to inspire future dance filmmaking processes.

Workshop 2:
Camera + Movement Scores Play Lab
12:30pm-2:30pm
This workshop is geared towards dancers/filmmakers with some previous dance film experience, but all are welcome to participate! You will deepen your dance filmmaking practice through a series of prompts and movement scores that ask you to connect body, breath, and movement with intention in moving with, through, around, underneath, above, and inside of the camera frame. The practice will support your camera stage presence AND help you hold the camera steadier and with more intention as a videographer. Towards the end of the workshop you will explore ideas that have emerged in a playful co-creation session.

SATURDAY AUGUST 31, 2024
1pm-5:30pm
Location: Cazo Dance Center, Mesa
Workshop 3:
Sound & Light Play Lab
1-3pm
This all-experience-levels-welcome workshop investigates what you know about sound and light, offers tips and tricks for capturing sound from a dance filmmaking perspective, and invites you to get creative in re-imagining how to play with different lighting “looks” for your project. You will work in pairs and small groups to play with maximizing sound recording for movement, speaking, room tone, and live music. Then you will switch it up to explore creative cinematically inspired lighting choices using everyday objects for mood lighting - romantic, horror, natural, club, etc. The workshop focus is to empower you with deeper knowledge of the filmmaking tools you have (phones, DSLRs, speakers, lamps, LED lights, fabrics, etc) to improve how you approach capturing sound and utilizing light for dance on camera. You are welcome to bring light and sound objects you want to play with, and there will be objects for inspiration provided. Each section will have some time for reflection on ideas you want to keep exploring for future inspiration.

Workshop 4:
Dance on Camera Guided Jam Session
3:30-5:30pm
This workshop is geared towards dancers/filmmakers with some previous dance film experience, but all are welcome to participate! For this guided jam session, you can come with collaborators you are already working with, or solo and be paired with new creative friends. Throughout the jam session you will be offered prompts for inspiration that begin with the basics (framing, movement, angles), move into more complexity (lighting, sound), and encourage you to explore your own filmmaking technique as you stay aware of how your body and the bodies around you are moving in space. The workshop focus is to refine your own filming technique of movement, bring awareness of how you feel in your body as you film and dance in front of the camera, and to be inspired to experiment (roll on the floor with the camera! Swap cameras as you dance! Find a new perspective to see movement through!). It will end with a sharing of takeaways, discoveries, and maybe even some new collaborators :).
